Power in Every Pose : Body-Positive Movement for Summer Strength
When it comes to building strength that radiates from the inside out, Kate Durand of YO BK is leading the charge with a refreshing, body-positive approach.
“Movement should uplift, strengthen and connect us,” she says. “It’s not about looking a certain way — it’s about feeling powerful in your body and confident in your skin.”
Whether you’re stepping into a studio for the first time or deepening a long-standing practice, her inclusive philosophy invites you to show up exactly as you are. Her classes center around functional movement, self-love and strength — not punishment.
To help newcomers get acquainted, Durand highlights a few foundational postures commonly seen in her classes — each one designed to boost strength, balance, flexibility and self-confidence.
Standing Backbend
A gentle heart-opener that connects you to your foundation. “Any depth or amount of movement will invigorate the body and mind,” Durand says.

Wide Forward Fold
A calming pose that slows the heart rate and lengthens the entire backside of the body. “This is great for grounding after a long day.”

Standing Fingers to Toes Pose
This shape cultivates balance and focus, physically and mentally. Falling and laughing at yourself is often part of this process!

Camel Pose
A deep backbend that opens the front body, targeting muscles like the quads, abdomen and chest. “It’s especially helpful for people who sit at a desk all day.”

Wheel Pose
A full-body heart opener with playful variations. “It’s one of my favorites because it reminds us to stay curious in our movement.”

Headstand
Known as the “king of all asanas,” this energizing yet calming inversion flips your perspective and strengthens your core. “Start at the wall,” she advises, “and move away as you build confidence. Eventually, try holding it for 10 slow breaths.”

Durand’s take on fitness transcends aesthetics. Her classes foster a space where strength is defined by showing up, tuning in and giving yourself grace. “This is your body,” she reminds students. “It’s worthy of care, strength and celebration — just as it is.”
