What is the first thing that comes to mind about skincare? Cleansers and serums, perhaps? Whatever we think of when we hear the word skincare, the first thing that comes to mind isn’t the inside of our bodies. Believe it or not, the body’s internal processes are just as important as topical care when healing and clearing skin prone to acne. Holism is a branch of medicine that assesses a patient as a whole, internally and externally, rather than solely focusing on a singular symptom. Holistic skincare ties into holistic medicine by healing the skin through various diets, supplements and lifestyle habits. Being intentional with all of these choices plays a significant role in the long-term improvement of acne.

In extreme cases, Accutane is prescribed to those who have exhausted all other treatment options. Accutane is an oral medication that aims to eliminate sebum production — or oils in the skin — that build up and cause pore blockage, resulting in acne. Although proven the most effective acne treatment, Accutane comes with its risks. Symptoms presented in the warning and information card included within the Accutane packaging include changes of pressure within the brain, joint problems, issues related to pregnancy/birth defects and, in some cases, severe mental health problems. It’s essential to raise the question: are these symptoms worth achieving clear skin when compatible alternatives, like holistic skincare, are an option?

Broad certified holistic nutritionist, certified Master Nutrition Therapist and owner of Profound Wellness in the Vail Valley Christine Pierangeli shares, “A holistic approach allows us to get to the root of acne conditions and builds resilience and health for the whole body by enhancing the gut microbiome and reducing inflammation using nutrition, lifestyle and supplementation with no negative side effects. On the contrary, Accutane is harmful to our overall health. It does get rid of acne, but at great cost to our overall health during use and beyond. The negative impact on our gut microbiome, which is responsible for digestive and mental health, can set users up for future disease and discomfort.”

Nutrition plays a huge role in clearing skin holistically. Consuming added sugar and processed foods creates systemic inflammation, a major contributor to acne and poor overall health.  However, this doesn’t mean people struggling with preventing or curing acne must veer away from enjoying foods. Through her many years of experience, Pierangeli found several anti-inflammatory recipes that she recommends to her clients on their road to creating healthy skin. Two of Pierangeli’s favorites include a quick and easy breakfast cookie and zesty chicken nuggets. These recipes are fun, easy and tasty, while also promoting great skin health.

Vitamin C is an easy and effective option when considering a supplement to treat acne. Vitamin C contains anti-inflammatories that reduce acne inflammation and redness if the acne is already on the skin. Vitamin C is a significant first step to preventing acne from forming, to begin with, and a great choice in combating its appearance if it is present. Furthermore, it’s essential to recognize the benefits of the anti-inflammatories in Vitamin C, an easy supplement that can be incorporated into any lifestyle and daily habits. Vitamin C, including capsules and chewables, comes in numerous forms and can be conveniently found at a local drug or grocery store. As far as dosage, it is advised to follow the dosage guidelines on the supplement’s packaging.

Lifestyle habits, like sleep, exercise and stress, play a significant role in the health of a person’s skin. Getting seven to nine hours of sleep allows for the skin barrier to renew and replenish itself. Cardio workouts help keep blood sugar levels even, which can help manage acne. Holistic practices and habits such as these can be incorporated into daily routines indefinitely. Minimizing stress is correlated with a decrease in acne. Stress reduction tools can include meditation and breathwork.

Accutane is an effective treatment for acne, yet using holistic practices can help us build a stronger, healthier body and avoid the detrimental side effects of the major medication.
