Inner Discovery at CIVANA : Next-Level Spa Decadence, Movement and Intricately Tailored Personal Growth Unite in the Sonoran Desert

Last Updated: June 8, 2026By

There’s an exclusive zip code north of buzzy Phoenix and trending Scottsdale that’s master planned around upscale wellness and leisure. Carefree, Arizona (yes, that’s the town’s actual name) is wrapped in saguaro- studded Sonoran Desert beauty, posh horse ranches, top-tier golf greens and private estates. The affluent sanctuary just 35 miles from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport boasts street names like Tranquility Lane and Nonchalant Way. It’s all blissfully intentional.

Comprising a little more than 20 of Carefree’s carefully preserved acres, CIVANA Wellness Resort & Spa is transcending health travel, reaching beyond scrubs, soaks and savasanas, and rolling out a mindful, modern menu of chakra and nature-based therapies.

Founders Marc Skalla and Adam Ross opened CIVANA — a play on “nirvana” — in 2018 with the goal of inviting more people into wellness by providing more choice, joy and accessibility through seasonally evolving programming, spa and culinary experiences.

“CIVANA was intentionally created as an approachable alternative to traditional destination spas and conventional wellness resorts,” says Julia Lavine, chief brand officer. “Rather than operating as a heavily structured retreat, we offer a flexible and approachable model that allows guests to engage at their own pace.”

This framework, centered around more than 100 weekly classes, hydrotherapy spa amenities and a robust plant-powered culinary program, supports long-term well-being by emphasizing sustainable practices.

Inner fire vinyasa flows, floating sound healings, “pick-your-proof” happy hours and soul-awakening journaling and manifesting workshops are the tip of the personal growth iceberg.

Guests take home stress management and integration tools from morning intention-setting ceremonies and evening gratitude circles. Breathwork, aerial stretch, restorative yoga and numerology classes provide opportunities to reflect and reset. Joyful Journey and Stars Align zodiac programs weave movement, positive mindset and personal energy.

The goal is to create an experience where slowing down happens through immersion rather than instruction, and small, consistent habits are taken home and used as everyday well-being approaches.

“We help guests integrate the practices learned at CIVANA into their life by offering wellness experiences that are designed to be repeatable and practical beyond their stay,” Lavine says. “Many of our movement and mindfulness classes, including breathwork, mobility, strength and meditation, intentionally focus on techniques guests can continue at home.”

The spa emphasizes an aqua therapy circuit designed to support circulation, recovery and nervous system regulation. Guests flow throughout hydrotherapy elements such as the Kneipp walk (oscillating between two shallow pools ranging between 50 and 104 degrees Fahrenheit), a cold deluge shower, a sanarium (a mild, humidity-controlled sauna) with five levels of steam and a Watsu therapy pool.

Massage options naturally include hot stone, Swedish, Thai and deep tissue. But for the zen-seekers willing to go next level, CIVANA’s bodywork menu features a two-hour transformative Spirit of the Desert treatment, beginning with a guided meditation and grounding sound bowls followed by oils, rhythmic motions and steam-warmed poultices of delicate flowers and herbs.

Leaning heavily into its zero-deprivation approach, dining menus support steady energy through balanced, satisfying dishes. Locally sourced produce and nutrient-rich ingredients show up in vegan matcha pancakes made with fresh berries, cacao nibs, local raw honey and coconut whipped cream. Zero-proof wines and nonalcoholic beer options are available across the resort and a mindful mixology cocktail and mocktail class serves as an interactive alternative to traditional bar culture.

As wellness culture shifts, CIVANA evolves, turning its lens to more hands-on everyday well-being. Gone are the days of jam-packed retreats loaded with exhausting physical itineraries. Today, it’s about flexibility and individualized comfort.

“Guests are increasingly looking for experiences that support long-term lifestyle habits, including recovery, moderation and emotional health, rather than highly structured or prescriptive retreats,” Lavine says. “In response, we continue to expand programming and offerings that feel flexible, accessible and aligned with how people want to live beyond their stay.”
