Music Review: “DEVA” Album by Mantra Singer Deva Premal | By Lexi Reich

Last Updated: May 4, 2020By

DEVA is a calling — beyond the chattering mind, the heaviness of the heart and the numerous distractions of life, into a place of refuge and conscious relaxation.

Mantra singer Deva Premal released her new album DEVA last fall and it has become a favorite on my meditation, yoga, sleep and dance playlists.

This album features a soulful, nurturing musical journey that inspires deep meditation and inner peace. Included in the album is the Seven Chakra Gayatri Mantra, a chant Deva had been hearing from her father since birth. Deva says the Gayatri Mantra “ushers her into the light” and is representative of her spiritual journey through musical expression. This intention combined with her soothing voice creates a serene musical experience unlike any I’ve experienced before.

Tracks include chants with life-partner Miten. The two, known as Deva Premal & Miten, not only model spiritually-conscious living, but also share powerful tools for wellness, mindfulness, and personal growth. They believe in the origins of music, where songs are community-based and interactive. Their mantras invite the present moment and unifying as one through the listening experience.

These tunes are the perfect tool to delve deeper inside, whether through simply listening, or as background music to your yoga and meditation practices. As I normally meditate in silence, weaving “DEVA” into my practice has offered a new path for me to tune inside.
