Buffalo & Sparrow Yoga Collective teaches people-informed yoga. “What is that?” you ask? People-informed yoga is for EVERYONE — all people. It’s taught with the awareness that each individual is coming to their mat with their own unique bodies, accessibilities, stresses, experiences, backgrounds, expectations and traumas (and didn’t we all just go through a collective trauma together? Oh right, a pandemic).
All of their teachers are trained to minimize harm and optimize agency. It is their goal to hold space for students, to show up fully and to empower students through their practice. Each teacher has been trained in trauma-awareness and inclusivity.
Many people ask, “What’s with the Buffalo & Sparrow?”
“Like the intention put behind our yoga classes, there is also purpose in our name. Everyone faces times of challenge in their lives. Our intention is to encourage each of us to ‘be the buffalo’ in our own lives,” says co-owner Rachel Stroud. “When faced with a storm, a buffalo (unlike cows and other herd animals) runs toward it, intuitively knowing it will get through it quicker and with less suffering. Well, this takes courage doesn’t it? Our motto is ‘courage in every breath.’ It also takes community, guidance and protection. Here is where the sparrow becomes vital.”
“A sparrow is the representation of protection, community, guidance, joy, hard work and triumph. The buffalo needs the sparrow in order to courageously and safely know when, with what support and how quickly to move through the storm. An unlikely pairing becomes destiny’s match and a safer path to transformation,” adds Stroud.
