Try It On : Hats for the Season — Summer 2024 | By Laura Mills
Some say accessories make the outfit; for me, it’s all about a hat. Adding hats to your wardrobe allows you to change an outfit’s look with little other alteration. Living in a place like Colorado, it often seems like everyone is rocking a hat. Whether it’s an expression of style, repping a brand you love or the perfect hat for your planned adventure, headwear is big here. When I asked my friends what I would have with me if I were a cartoon character, next to my dog and a pair of skis, almost everyone said a hat. When I was brainstorming what to share with our readers for this month’s gear picks, a variety of hats was a no-brainer.
From running to leisure, days on the water and long hours in the sun, I’ve put together a round-up of three hats I love from companies who care. Keep reading to see what’s trending!
Coal Headwear Seamless Boonie Hat
Being 27, I have lived through the peak of the reinvented bucket hat era. From funky prints for festival wear to practicality for long days in the sun, everyone should have a bucket hat in their collection. Coal sets the stage when it comes to thought and construction. In their upcoming seasonal collections, you will find a wide variety of brimmed hats. From short brims to the largest of brims — there’s a little something for everyone. When chatting with the Coal team, the Seymour caught my eye. I liked that it could go full boonie mode for days I want to channel that side of my style or I could unsnap the brim for a typical bucket hat vibe. The secret pocket in the crown of the hat is perfect for the days you know you may be in water up to your chest. The Coal team is inspired by vintage style and roots and the synergy that ties to the brand.
“Headwear’s not necessarily a new category so there’s a lot of historical references that we look into. Maybe there is a really cool style we’ve found in a vintage shop that needs to be updated, a lot of the bucket hats are in that vein. For example, we take inspiration from the traditional army surplus style bucket hats that just need a stylish or functional tweak to make it more on-brand with Coal.” explains Mat Savage, marketing manager and creative director. “A lot of the styles come from us looking at what we would want to wear and fitting that into the history of the brand, into the market, and what our flare aligns with.”
The Coal team sets the stage in variety, intention and construction. From winter to summer and everything in between, Coal listens to its team riders and consumers while staying true to their roots when it comes to what they’re doing next.
Skida Running Cap
If you recreate in the outdoors and love to add a little personal flare to your athletic fit, there’s a strong chance you know who Skida is and what they’re about. From brimmed hats to buffs and everything in between — they’ve nailed it from prints to technology. This season, they set themselves apart and jumped into a running-specific hat. I’m a firm believer that you run better when you love your fit. The Skida Running Cap is my new go-to running hat. From the breathable mesh sides to the adjustable and sturdy closure, feeling cute and capable on the trails has never been easier.
As the brand shares, “In the outdoor industry, we see a lot of products that are highly technical, but the aesthetic doesn’t always translate to street appeal. At Skida, we believe that you can achieve both. We want our products to be highly technical so that you can wear them on your hardest, longest days on the trail, but we also want our community to feel comfortable and stylish sporting them throughout their day.”
Skida is a women-owned company based in the heart of Vermont. From bright feminine colors to masculine and gender-neutral prints, Skida has you covered from your hat to your bike fender.
Powloha x YoColorado Rope Hat
Being from New England, the water has been a huge influence in my life and it seeps into my style as well. Though I’ve spent time feet from the ocean for the majority of my life, I’ve never been a surfer but have always appreciated the laidback and effortless flare that comes with the surf mentality. When I walked by the YoColorado booth at GoPro Mountain Games in Vail, Colorado this year, a purple suede hat with a skier riding through tropical flowers immediately grabbed my attention. “If I was a hat, I would be this hat,” I said to my friend. The suede construction with the orange and yellow accents were icing on the cake to the blonde skier ripping through hibiscus flowers. Not only does this hat look good, but it feels good on my head too. Reinforced where necessary and relaxed in all the right places. YoColorado has been around since 2013 providing fun, capable and versatile styles for the Colorado (and beyond!) lifestyle.
“Yo is a small-batch, slow fashion brand with a focus on high-quality, long-lasting styles that are functional, casual, and versatile. Clothing that is timeless, hopefully, and has a groovy vibe built right into it that makes you want to wear it all the time, from the porch to the peak. Functional, but not technical. Outside rugged, but indoor cozy. For us, no detail is too small … but keeping things small is an important part of our identity,” explained Brad Miller, managing partner of YoColorado.
Whether you’re looking for apparel or the perfect hat for your vibe, YoColorado knows what they’re doing and wants to make sure you look and feel good doing what you love.
The next time you feel like your outfit is missing some personalized flare, consider adding a hat to the mix to spice up your style!
